Fritz Henkel School presents new environmental statement
The Fritz Henkel-School in Düsseldorf-Garath has produced its second environmental statement. It was ceremonially presented on the occasion of a school fete. During lessons and on project days, all 561 students of the non-denominational school worked on the review of the targets defined in the first environmental statement in 1998. They and their teachers were supported in this by employees of the sponsoring company, Henkel.
The 32 pages of the environmental statement contain information about the work of the individual project groups. Results, new targets and planned measures for a variety of fields such as waste, paper, water, energy, traffic and the layout of the school playground are explained in in a clear and uncomplicated fashion. As one of the first German schools to do so, the Fritz Henkel-School expanded its environmental report to a sustainability report, by incorporating social aspects such as a description of a school initiative focusing on how to settle disputes among students.
In 1998 the Fritz Henkel School was the first secondary school in Germany to collect environmental data in the context of an eco audit and then publish results and actions in an environmental statement. The purpose of these activities is to transform the theory and practice of ecology and sustainable development into a key element of the school´s educational task.
